How to Tell If Your Marketing Is Actually Working

Views are interesting. Qualified calls, inquiries, and booked work tell you whether the effort is helping.

Pick a business outcome

Start with what a win looks like: estimate requests, consultations, orders, calls, visits, or repeat customers. A thousand impressions with no next step can be less useful than ten visits from people looking for exactly your service.

Separate discovery from action

Google Search Console can show which searches surface your site, along with impressions, clicks, and indexing information. Those are discovery signals. Pair them with a simple record of forms, phone calls, bookings, and actual sales so you can see what happens after someone arrives.

Ask a human question

“How did you hear about us?” can reveal referrals, a business card, Google, social media, or North Idaho Shop Local. It is not perfect attribution—people may encounter you in several places—but it adds context that a dashboard cannot.

Review monthly, not hourly

Compare a sensible period and look for patterns: which services generate qualified inquiries, which pages confuse visitors, which ads bring work you want to do. Small sample sizes swing easily. Make one change at a time, note when it happened, and let the evidence accumulate.

The takeaway

Measure the signal closest to your goal. If the goal is a conversation with the right customer, design every channel to make that conversation easier.
