Why Small Local Businesses Matter More Than You Think

The local shop, crew, and maker are not a side story. Small businesses are a major part of the American economy—and the everyday fabric of our communities.

Filed under Community. Practical notes from Baer Paw Marketing for businesses in North Idaho and beyond.

The big picture

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, 99.9% of U.S. businesses are small businesses. Its 2025 report counted 36.2 million small businesses and said they account for almost 46% of private-sector employment. Those are national figures, not a North Idaho headcount, but they make the scale hard to ignore.

The part a spreadsheet misses

A local business can be the crew that shows up after a storm, the shop owner who remembers your order, or the craftsperson who recommends another local pro when a job is not their specialty. That kind of familiarity is difficult to import. It grows through repeated, real relationships.

Discovery is part of support

People cannot choose a nearby business if they cannot find it. Useful websites, accurate listings, clear photos, and word of mouth make local options visible. That is why we built North Idaho Shop Local: a place to discover the businesses and stories rooted here.

One simple action

The next time you have a project, search locally before assuming the right business must be somewhere else. And when a local business helps you, tell a neighbor or leave an honest review. Small acts of discovery add up.
